You’ll never have enough Building Points to pick up every talent, proficiency, or skill that you want Combat is extremely elegant and very freeform, but again that’s dependent on understanding the combat rules My problem with these statements is that I can’t think of a single game system that they don’t apply to.

The HackMaster RPG is the game of choice for those that know the difference between ordinary and epic. This inexpensive PDF expands upon the free version with added rules, combat options, spells and advancement to 10th level.

Please understand that my comment here wasn’t a simple dismissal, but rather a legitimate critique. The book begins with 6 pages of “quick start rules,” which, despite the name, focus more on quickly generating a character rather than teaching you how to play the game. Displaying 1 to 12 of 19 products. I feel bad that you bought them and haven’t been able to use them yet: Because the rules are shoddy, inconsistent, confusing, and don’t actually tell you how to play the bloody thing.

Most of the number crunching is done as chargen and the answers are then on your character sheet for future reference.

Plus you have the security of continued support with a variety of pre-packaged adventure modules hcakmaster a extensively detailed home world.

HackMaster Basic – Designers’ Foreword

Definitely worth a one-off if nothing else. So I believe that there’s quite a market for HackMaster out there.

I am VERY Interested in reading reviews and fair criticisms of the game, but from someone who hasn’t played it. As portrayed there, HM was a rules-heavy, complex old school game whose players liked to out-maneuver one another — and their embittered GM — with a combination of rules lawyering and geek machismo. What you hold in your hands is the skeleton key that unlocks the chains that have confined you to the humdrum world of the mundane for your entire life.

For most games, having some preconceived notion of what to expect or background experience makes the transition easier.

HackMaster Basic takes the passion, know-how and attitude more on that attitude in a moment from the last edition along with years of experience garnered along the way and takes the game to the next level. The best way I can think to put it is that there’s a lot of rules, but they’re all relatively easy to pick up on, once you give it a shot. The Hidden Shrine C2: I was lucky enough to get both the Hacklopedia and the PHB for Christmas, and while I haven’t read completely through them yet, the humor seems way reduced from what I remember of 4th edition.

Retrieved May 13, The monster section is solid and includes a good stable of creatures to use, while the treasure section is a bit spottier, which I suppose is to be expected given HackMaster Basic ‘s focus on levels Some will no doubt find the concept of Honor a heavy-handed way to enforce “proper” roleplaying and so it is. Class Based Pilot, Wizard, Scientist, etc.

The char gen system for one, while complex, is a cool little solo sub-game by itself. The rules seem daunting at first, but once you have a few games under your belt they start becoming second nature and feel far more fluid than most other d20 games I’ve played. James February 18, at 7: I appreciate the lack of homogenization here, with the fighter being the simple hit-stuff-until-it-dies class suitable for newbies, while mages require more cleverness and skill to play effectively.

But I can tell you from experience, the game itself is only as silly as any other RPG once you play it, which of course is all dependent on the group itself. Shields and heavy armor that irrationally make you harder to hit, minor magics that scale with the level of the caster, static armor classes… the list goes on. This is because while HackMaster plays like an old-school game, its fluid mechanics more closely models real-life than any previous edition old or new school.

Rules in practice review. If there is something old-school, I haven’t found it. Accept the randomness and start with more points, reject the randomness by sacrificing points – these are functionally identical concepts, so I think my question stands. Playing a thief or worse, a mage like a fighter just gets the character… and sometimes the party… killed.

My problem with these statements is that I can’t think of a single game system that they don’t apply to. This is often not so with HackMaster; in fact, complete gaming newbs sometimes command a distinct learning-curve advantage over their seasoned RPG counterparts.

But I agree with James – there are lots of people for whom this will strike a sweet spot. In all likelihood you cut your teeth on another game system and have either picked this game up as a curiosity or plan to move hackmaste HackMaster as a temporary or permanent change of pace.

Every time I bring it up, they dismiss it as a silly joke curiosity. I really do like the basic underlying system here. Its very much written with an old school mentality but with some newer rule mechanics for example all the stats have real value, even to a tank fighter and Ive always been a huge fan of the honor rules Kenzer has developed.

Curiously though, HackMaster Basic promised the removal of hac, master joke elements, but I would consider the inclusion of both the comic strip and the rrpg chapter to be joke elements. Will Mistretta February 21, at 9: Nothing is handed to me on a silver platter; I have to fight hacckmaster everything, whether that “fight” is a literal combat, or in just the tough decision of where to place my precious Building Points at character creation or level up, and that fight makes the entire game so much more rewarding.

No single hackmawter can be all things to all players. Do not submit video game content unless the game is based on a tabletop RPG property and is newsworthy. Mages should be kept out of melee at all costs. Retrieved from ” https: That, to me, is its great glory and its great disappointment.
