Definitely worth a one-off if nothing else. So I believe that there’s quite a market for HackMaster out there.
I am VERY Interested in reading reviews and fair criticisms of the game, but from someone who hasn’t played it. As portrayed there, HM was a rules-heavy, complex old school game whose players liked to out-maneuver one another — and their embittered GM — with a combination of rules lawyering and geek machismo. What you hold in your hands is the skeleton key that unlocks the chains that have confined you to the humdrum world of the mundane for your entire life.
For most games, having some preconceived notion of what to expect or background experience makes the transition easier.
HackMaster Basic takes the passion, know-how and attitude more on that attitude in a moment from the last edition along with years of experience garnered along the way and takes the game to the next level. The best way I can think to put it is that there’s a lot of rules, but they’re all relatively easy to pick up on, once you give it a shot. But I agree with James – there are lots of people for whom this will strike a sweet spot. In all likelihood you cut your teeth on another game system and have either picked this game up as a curiosity or plan to move hackmaste HackMaster as a temporary or permanent change of pace.
Every time I bring it up, they dismiss it as a silly joke curiosity. I really do like the basic underlying system here. Its very much written with an old school mentality but with some newer rule mechanics for example all the stats have real value, even to a tank fighter and Ive always been a huge fan of the honor rules Kenzer has developed.
Curiously though, HackMaster Basic promised the removal of hac,master joke elements, but I would consider the inclusion of both the comic strip and the rrpg chapter to be joke elements.
